This album has changed Marvin Gayes trajectory as an artist and is also the most significant album of the decade. The first episode of For the Record is dedicated to What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye. I’m your hostess Racquel Deeds and welcome to For The Record.

Before the single was released in 1971, Barry Gordy was doubtful of the success; not only jeopardizing Motown Records but Marvin’s Career. The single was made at the peak of the civil rights era and the injustice for veterans in the country.

In all actuality, we were never supposed to see the beauties of this album. The label sat on this single for months until Marvin threatened to never write for Motown again; and that was something that they could not lose.

Within the first three days of the single release of What’s Going On , more than 200,000 copies were sold. It was the fastest-selling single in Motown history. This quickly changed Barry Gordy’s mind and pushed Marvin to produce the full album.
What’s Going On, the album, isn’t a question but a statement. Each song talks about challenges from 53 years ago that we face today. It explores political issues, environmental concerns, racial injustice and urban decay. So it’s still fair to ask, What IS Going on?
